Record Steenbuck!!

Record Steenbuck!!

A very proud Bruce Johnson from America hunted this record Steenbuck male in the Free State Province of South Africa during the 2008 season.

After returning from a leopard hunt in Namibia Bruce visited one of the World to Africa Hunting lodges in the Free State to hunt a Black Wildebeest and trophy Steenbuck.

The hunt started in the afternoon and after walking the grass plains for a few hours he decided to look for the shade of a tree during the afternoon heat.Bruce and the PH laid down a while and when looking around after the rest the PH spotted a pair of horns in the long grass.Bruce slowly lifted his rifle and placed a very good shot on the vitals. The Steenbuckwent down on the spot and when they reached the beautiful animal they saw the massive horns!!

The biggest horn measured 6″ and Rowland Ward is only 4 1/2″,this was the biggest Steenbuck ever hunted on the Free State farm and will always be very special to us.

Bruce hunted most of the plains game species in Africa and quoted that his record Steenbuck is one of his favourite trophies.

The Steenbuck is truly a magnificent little antelope and is one of the only animals that actually groom themselves to stay in a very good shape.

Well done Bruce on this unforgettable African Hunting Safari!!

  1. Let me say that Bruce has hunted many times over three countries in Africa, and this might be his second favorite trophy (next to his buffalo of course).

Many people do not give the credit to these animals that is deserved. Like any hunting you can get them right away, or by some bit of luck. But many hunters take days, or even safaris to get a good steenbok.

The Free State hunting area is a good area to look for these trophy steenboks, as there is a good mix of brush and open areas so you can get a good stalk on them if needed.

    Brad,

You hit it on the head. Next to a great double buffalo hunt, this one goes down right up next to it. These small antelope are a real challenge. They seldom give much time to shoot, are wary when you approach and are lightning quick. They spook, there is no follow up. gone.

This trophy is still in transit but I am having it done full body standing but maybe in a down position. It will go next to the buffalo and proudly without appology, big fella in a small package,

I know, I know. never correct the PH, but I recall the horn length was just a little hair under 7 inches, Andre….with a real wire

  3. Best Bruce,

Likely the client is always there to guide the PH on the right track!! If we judge the horns smaller then we can’t get into trouble when they are bigger, but if they are smaller we have a lot of explaining to do….

I just returned from a month holiday on the Free State farm and in all the years driving around or hunting never saw a steenbuck even close to the one you hunted. Talking to all the neigbors in the area telling them about your big steenbuck just confirmed that they also never saw a steenbuck that big.

The little fellows with the big horns also get that big by not showing themselves and like the “Grey Ghost” of Africa the Kudu get more clever the older they get.

Well done again!! Maybe we will walk in to his farther or brothers one day and have the privelige of meeting a big little fellow like that.

Hi I picked up a scull of a Steenbuck this weekend near Groenriver, Namaqualand, West Coast, South Africa, the size of the right horn 11.8cm (4.64″) left horn 12.1cm (4.76″). I have spotted several Steenbuck with fairly big horns in that area in the past. Regards Andre Hanzen, Worcester

  5. Best Andre, the Rowland Ward minimum for this beautifull little antelope is 4.5″ and the horns that you collected qualify for this record book. You can register the trophy under your name as a “pick-up”.They are found commonly throughout South Africa and are one of the “Little 10″ antelope. Thank you for informing us of this little BIG trophy. Andre Nortje
