John & Julie Svihel - Hunting in South Africa 2010

Good friends and old clients John & Julie arrived in South Africa to hunt with us again in 2010 on the 24th March after a misunderstanding and waiting for them at the airport the previous day!!

We planned the hunt to start in Limpopo at Waterberg proceed to North West to hunt rhino and ending in the Western Cape at Bergplaats Hunting Farm. I visited John & Julie earlier this year at their beautiful vegetable farm in Minnesota and most of the planning for the hunt was done then between hunting and snowmobiling while there.

The hunt started early the morning of the 25th after sighting the rifle and having a few good laughs about John missing the target twice!! (all planned to see the reaction of the PH’S)

While hunting at Waterberg John bagged a few good trophies including warthog, jackal, nyala, common reedbuck a huge blesbuck and baboon. Please see photos below:

On Monday the 29th we transferred to NorthWest to green hunt a Trophy Rhino Bull the next day. We had a few very exciting and close encounters with the rhino and at one stage John was less then 10 yards from the rhino before he took off!! (The rhino not John) It took us a few hours and a lot of running and stalking to get close enough for the shot and he eventually took the shot at about 25 yards. The bull was very big with a 28″ length and it all ended very well.

On the morning of the 31March they drove to the Western Cape with PH Wiehan as I could not join them having to leave for a hunting expo in Italy. While hunting at Bergplaats Hunting Farm, John bagged a few very good trophies including a monster Steenbuck. The report below are from the farm while having a great time there:

On Wednesday the 31st of March 2010 we welcomed our first trophy hunter to Bergplaats, John and his wife Julie Svihel, from Minnesota in the USA.  They where accompanied by PH Wiehan Buchholz and his tracker/skinner Philemon.

They arrived late on the Wednesday and after a great meal it was off to bed and up early the next morning.

On Thursday the 1st of April we first headed off to the shooting range to see if the rifle was still sighted in and after a few shots and a few small adjustments, we went off for Gemsbuck (Oryx), & eventually bagged one late the afternoon.

On Friday the 2nd of April we started the day brilliantly by bagging a good Klipspringer, only an hour after we set off, but the day was far from over. Later that afternoon we bagged a good Mountain Reedbuck

We decided to go try for Springbuck before Lunch and with everything going our way we quickly bagged a Kalahari Springbuck and after taking photos we went to have lunch. After lunch we headed out for Springbuck again and late the afternoon we managed to bag a great Common Springbuck.

On Saturday the 3rd of April Julie went off to the KKNK in Oudtshoorn to see some of South Africa’s art talent, but the hunting continued with John and the morning he bagged two Common Springbuck and late the afternoon he bagged a good Grey Duiker.

On Sunday the 4th of April John and Julie decided to see more of our beautiful country and took a trip around the Garden Route, as well as bunjying Bloukrantz, which is 216 meters high, while Julie enjoyed it and said she would do it again, John on the other hand said it was the first and a last time and they would never see him again.

On Monday the 5th of April they were still taking in the sites of our beautiful country and arrived late the afternoon, we decided to go try for Jackal, Bat-Eared Fox and Caracal, as we had done all the other nights, but without success.

On Tuesday the 6th of April we headed out for the last Springbuck of his package and soon bagged a good Springbuck with skew horns, that afternoon we decide to rest and have a good night session that night. We started the night great by bagging two Bat-Eared Foxes and to our luck the Jackal decided to come out this night, we must have seen at least 8 Jackals but unfortunately John didn’t manage to bag one.

On Wednesday the 7th of April we started looking at where John had shot at some Jackal for any tracks but without luck. After lunch we took John and Julie off to see God’s Window and on our way we spotted a massive Steenbuck and after John asked Willie if he can shoot it he bagged this monster Steenbuck.

On Thursday the 8th of April they were all off early the morning back to Johannesburg Airport to catch there flight.

It was the first trophy hunter and it went really well, bagging some great trophies and having a good time at Bergplaats and of course enjoying the food, so it will certainly not be the last.

It was great to have John & Julie hunting with us again and can’t wait to hunt buffalo with John in Zimbabwe later this year. As Julie said she thinks that John must apply for dual citizenship in South Africa as he just can’t get enough…!!

From all the staff at World to Africa we wish you all the best with your farm this summer and thank you very much hunting with us again.

We follow ethical practices for wing shoot in South Africa. This means that we do not support canned wing shoot in South Africa practices. In such instances, captive birds are released to be shot by hunters – some are shot as they are released. This type of action is against the principles of giving birds a fair chance and respecting them as life forms which make a positive contribution to our planet. Never consume any alcohol before you wing shoot in South Africa. Unless you have a dog to retrieve the water fowl which fell into water after a shot, you may not shoot at water fowl flying over water. Use only shot and rifles in the best combination as prescribed by the professional hunter to ensure a clean and merciful kill.

The gemsbuck roams in small herds of about 12 with a dominant bull to lead the herd. Although mostly found in the Kalahari, gemsbuck hunting in the Free State and Limpopo can also be done. It is a buck that has long before today learned the skills of survival and is also one that has to be shot just right. The first shot in gemsbuck hunting is essential. You will need to hit the vital organs. As such you have to get closer to the animal for a clean shot, which may also be the most difficult of tasks. The animals will stand still until you get close and then break away, making it difficult to get the clean shot. When it comes to trophy gemsbuck hunting, the general rule is that a longer portion of smooth horn will indicate an older animal and will thus be the better trophy.

The waterbuck is a dangerous animal when wounded, and in most cases a bit on the aggressive side to start with. As such extreme caution should be used when you go waterbuck hunting in Africa. They are difficult to spot and you should be ready for action before you meet the animal. You will find that the animals are normally close to water sources. Waterbuck hunting can take place in the early mornings when they are quite active or in the afternoons when they lay down under the trees. It should be noted the bulls are very territorial and should not be misjudged at all. The best way to go about waterbuck hunting is to walk through the thick vegetation until a herd is spot. Be patient it will not be long before you see the bull. Their meat however, is not tasty at all and is a bit on the smelly side, but as trophies you don’t get more challenging.

Probably the most exciting of hunts – that of leopard hunting in Africa, is not for the fainthearted. The animal is shrewd and outsmarts the hunter on many an occasion. It is a dangerous animal, not so much because of size and strength, but because it is well camouflaged, difficult to spot, exceptionally fast and highly intelligent. The cat is best shot with a calibre of 30.06 upwards. It is essential to target the vital organs area or the shoulder. Since few people will be lucky enough to have successful leopard hunting within a two week hunt safari, most outfitters follow the baiting option where the hunter waits for the animal to come to the bait. It is important to note that no lights may be used in any animal hunting. As such the skill lies in the waiting and ability to get a clean shot.

Book any of our packages which include blesbuck hunting in South Africa, Namibia or Botswana for an exiting hunt. The blesbuck came near to extinction not so long ago, but thanks to large scale re-introduction on farms in the mentioned countries, their numbers have increased considerably over the years. The meat is tender and tastier than most of the antelope species. Most of the blesbuck hunting in South Africa takes place in the Karoo and the grassland plains of the Free State. Long shots may be required and as such the calibres suitable range from 2.70 and 30.06 to 300 Magnum rifles. Only dare to shoot the animals with a .22 calibre if a close shot can be taken. There are no CITES restrictions on blesbuck hunting in South Africa.

Some tips for lion hunting safaris in Africa are shared below. First you should note that you will not easily get a kill shot if you aim at the neck or head because of the lion’s mane which is thick. The best shot will be one aimed at the vital organs by focusing on the shoulder blades. Unlike popular belief you will not require a large bore calibre for lion hunting safaris in Africa. The animals have soft skins and as such a .300 Magnum and higher with soft nose bullets will suffice. Although the large mane lion is the dream of many a hunter, it should be noted that the mane size will vary according to the habitat. As such the focus should not be on the size of the mane, but rather the animal itself.

Many people believe that elephant hunting safaris are illegal. The truth is that the majestic animals are also the destroyers of their habitat. If there was unlimited space to roam, it would not have been a problem as the bush would heal itself over time, but since we as human beings also require space, we have encroached on theirs. As such the elephant population often becomes too big for the allocated areas. Elephant hunting safaris in specific African countries are thus legal. Any elephant hunting safaris undertaken are done within the ethical, environmental, and legal limitations of the specific country. Controlled elephant hunting safaris contribute to nature conservation and as such it is recommended that you only book such a trip through reputable hunters and outfitters such as WTA as we take nature conservation and the safety of our clients seriously.
